In such environments, where there is a serious risk of explosions, overpressure and vacuum conditions generated inside the tank by warming/cooling cycles of the fluid and emptying/filling operations tend to increase the exposure to this hazard. This can be prevented by expelling the excess air through a venting port or vent pipe. Tank Vent Dryer operates as a breather and can be simply installed with a direct connection to an existing breather or vent pipe. The absence of moving parts or electrical components in the Tank Vent Dryer minimises the possible causes of ignition. Tank Vent Dryer complies with the directive 94/9/EC (ATEX) and therefore is suited for applications where there is a high exposure to hazards such as potential explosions.

On the other hand, when the direction of the flow is inverted (negative pressure) and air is pushed inside the tank, it is extremely important that external contaminating agents and moisture laden air do not enter the container. Tank Vent Dryer is the ideal solution to protect any volatile fluid from moisture. Industrial fluids in general are affected by water vapour contamination, which modifies the fluid properties. F or example, biofuels are particularly sensitive to moisture due to their nature. Presence of water in this type of fuel can potentially cause bacteria growth which will decrease the performance of the fuel. In addition, depending on the fluid chemical composition and on the ambient temperature, moisture can also cause corrosion problems and formation of ice.

Tank Vent Dryer is available in various configurations, materials and sizes, it can be wall mounted (models 605, 610 and 615) or floor mounted (models 620, 630). How does the little silica gel bag do its work?

For years I have thought the silica gel bag inside a brief case, camera bag, hand bag, shoes and electronics protected these products against damage by damp and condensation during shipment from China and the surrounding areas.

As a company which manufactures and sells silica gel bags, we wanted to investigate this practise of using desiccant bags to protect goods in shipping by sea.

There are contrasting opinions about the real benefit deriving from the use of these bags due to their small size and, more important, from the fact that the goods are not sealed or kept in an enclosed environment. And ultimately this would lead to rapid saturation of the silica gel bag.

Experts who work for companies in the moisture protection field would approach the problem in a different way. They would probably want to know the material of the item to be protected, its volume, the typical ambient conditions (temperature, relative humidity, etc.), the storage duration, etc... And they will all come out saying that a small silica gel bag (1-3 grams) would not be able to protect anything because of the limited amount of desiccant and the absence of a sealed container.

We have now had some opportunity to test how a 3 grams silica gel bag inside a briefcase protects against humidity in different ambient conditions.

A safe environment for leather goods will maintain ambient temperature and relative humidity within a certain range. Mould would start to appear when the relative humidity exceeds 60%. However, an excessive desiccation would dry out the goods deteriorating the material. For this reason, the relative humidity should never decrease below approximately 45%RH.

The results of test showed that in extreme humid conditions, typical of a maritime environment, the sachet saturates in a week on average. This certainly doesn’t cover the shipping time.

In room ambient conditions (22°C and 35%) the sachet has a quick initial adsorption and once it exceeds half of its adsorption capacity, the adsorption process gets slower. The point when it slows down is reached in approximately 15 days, which it is still very short.

We initially thought that when the temperature varies, that little silica gel bag that was saturated before, reactivates a decent percentage of its adsorption capacity to be able to adsorb again during the next cycle.

This theory couldn’t be proved by the test.

Simultaneous monitoring of ambient temperature, relative humidity and dewpoint

Brownell has introduced an Electronic Relative Humidity Indicator as an alternative to paper and chemical colour based indicators.

The new Electronic Humidity uses a polymer humidity sensor combined with a thermocouple to provide a digital display reading of relative humidity, ambient temperature and dewpoint. Dewpoint is an absolute measure and is not influenced by temperature.

Dewpoint indicates the temperature to which the system or instrument can be cooled before condensation (or frost) will occur. This qualifies dewpoint as a quality control standard for specify an operating performance for systems and instruments.

The Electronic Indicator is mounted in a robust IP67 enclosure with a membrane press switch to activate the three readings in sequence. The key parameter that determines the level of relative humidity of the air is the Dew Point. When the ambient temperature decreases to the Dew Point temperature, the relative humidity hits 100 % and the air is saturated. Formation of condensation is the direct consequence of this process and the water formed by the condensation of the water vapour present in the air will, in turn, deposit on the surfaces.

Although the majority of the electronics is protected by enclosures or other water-proof containers, moist air can penetrate into the cabinet and water may deposit on circuit boards determining a significant cause of failure.

Condensation on the board produces dramatic effects on all the elements that are part of the electrical circuit. Surface moisture leads to formation of corrosion of tracks and pads, which in turn will increase the electrical resistance and reduce the performance of the electrical component. A more unpleasant possibility involves the growth of metal dendrites or metal filaments on the board surface, which, passing through tracks and pads, can cause short circuits and ultimate failure of the PCB.

Conformal coatings, currently used to protect electronics from the external environment are expensive and not suitable under conditions of high humidity. The impossibility to use desiccant bags for this scope together with the necessity to reduce the risk of desiccant dust contamination, make the Moisture Adsorbing Board the appropriate solution to this problem.

The Moisture Adsorbing Board is a sheet-form desiccant agent, available in a standard 295mm x 205mm x 1.6mm and A4 sheet size, which protects the components from moisture and acts as physical barrier between the PCB and the external environment.

Numerous variations on the shape and size of moisture control products are required to address different needs. As a consequence, designing different prototypes may turn to be relatively expensive. However, the Board can be cut, shaped and punched according to the user`s specific needs.

The main benefit is represented by the adaptability of the Moisture Adsorbing Board; hence its ability to offer adequate protection in those situations in which conventional desiccant bags cannot be employed.
