How to dry your flowers using Silica Gel

Thursday, 9 May 2019 14:02:00 Europe/London

This video will show you how to preserve your flowers for a memorial occasion such as a wedding, valentine’s day, birthday or anniversary using silica gel desiccant to adsorb the moisture out of the flowers in order to preserve the full shape of your flowers and maintain the three-dimensional effect.

Selecting the right silica gel desiccant for the preservation of your flowers would be a smaller granular size less than 1mm for an optimum drying process.

Please click on the link below to purchase your non-indicating silica gel online:

https://brownell.co.uk/1kg-non-indicating-silica-gel-0-0-3mm-granular.html

Equipment Required

  1. Air tight plastic container

  2. 1kg 0.03mm non-indicating silica gel desiccant

  3. Flowers

  4. A small brush (to remove excess silica gel from the flower)

  5. Small plastic container (to remove the silica gel)

Instructions

  1. First what you’ll want to do is put a layer of silica gel in at the bottom of the container.

  2. Then make sure to have your flowers stem cut short and place it upright into the silica gel make sure it stands up right like that.

  3. Now take your silica gel and pour around the flowers and not on top because you don't want to flatten them and ruin the shape of your flowers, so go around them slowly and build around the flowers.

  4. Once you have enough around your flowers proceed to cover the top of the flowers till you can’t see the flowers anymore like that.

  5. It’s been 2 weeks now and our roses are ready to be taken out of the silica gel. So slowly pour out some of the silica gel till you are able to see the flowers. (Depending on the type of flowers that have been chosen for the drying process and how many petals contained, it can take up to 2-8 weeks or longer)

  6. Once you’re able to see the flowers go ahead and pick it up

  7. Be careful as the flowers are very delicate and you can easily lose a petal now just turn it over give it a quick shake and put it to the side safely and continue to do this with the other flowers.

  8. For the finishing touches find yourselves a brush with a very soft tip to clean up the tiny bits of silica gel leftover on the flower that are stuck to it and after you’ve cleaned up your flowers there ready to be used.
